Montorfano's peak

This tour will not simply be a guided hike, rather a symbolic walk through the history and the events that made this region great, from prehistoric to modern age.

The tour will start in Mergozzo, a lovely village on the Lake Mergozzo’s shores. After a short tour of its historic center, we begin our easy walk along the Lake and into the green forests surrounding it, up to Montorfano. This village is a true hidden gem, an incredible little village that shows a 1500-year-old church, ancient stone houses and an incredibly picturesque atmosphere where time has literally stopped. A short break to explore the area, to enjoy the first breathtaking views and soon it will be time to start our hike to the mountain peak.

The path is simply fascinating, constantly shifting between lush forests and unexpected and increasingly breathtaking panoramas. We will pass through the remaining ancient green granite extraction site to see where the glorious stone was extracted. This green granite one of those used to build Milan´s well-known Duomo (Cathedral).

Once we reach the peak, there will be time for a well-deserved break. Here we will be surrounded by several old bunkers. The peak was part of the legendary WWI defensive system called “Cadorna Line”. The view here is just unbelievable: the Alps on one side, the lakes on the other side! On the way down, there will be time for another discovery, la Polveriera, an abandoned powder keg perched into the rocks at hundreds of feet up in the mountain. After this last incredible spot, down we go on the ancient military road and reach Mergozzo for a last relaxing moment in one of the local bars.
